My mother in the beginning of 2008; suffered 2 mild strokes a month apart. Prior to the strokes she was an active vibrant lady of 82; could do everything herself; only suffering from some slight deafness. She drove her self everywhere; cooked and was able to live by herself with confidence. My sister; Diane takes care of her now. Per Diane; she has lost a lot of bladder control due to meds she has to take; She has changed and become very dependent and needs 24 hour care to assist her with her daily needs. She lives in Massachusetts and I in Wichita, Kansas. The distance is so great. I want to be there and help her take care of the mother I love yet I can not. Here I am the one with the CNA training yet I can’t be there to help. Diane is coping as best she can, she is going through a divorce and still trying to raise her own two little boys and take care of Mom at her house in Reading Massachusetts. I have tried to tell her I would be happy to take Mom in- It would mean Mom would be away from the rest of the family (all of her sisters and brothers that love her so much)
To say that my relationship with my mother has had it’s ups and downs is an understatement - Many times she has not trusted my judgment choices until it has had been proven to her it was sound with all types of topics ranging from adulthood, parenthood, relations, and even fashion style sense. Although I would yearn for her acceptance; I long ago had to simply just break away and make my own way to find the happiness I would yearn for. Both parents hated my choice of David; only later did they see we were meant to be together and have been for going on 16 years.
Yet even with all these conflicts, I love my Mother. I may not understand her but I do love her. I do not want to put her into a nursing home. I intend to prevent that at any cost. I will try to stick by her with all the love in my heart.
